Naxos Town is the port & capital of the island. Lively and lovely town with an old town around the medieval Venetian Castle.

Portara (Apollo Temple in Naxos Town)

Naxos Town or Hora is the island's port and capital. It is a picturesque typical Cycladic town with a maze of narrow streets and alleyways around the Venetian Kastro (Old Hora or Old Town of Naxos).

Approaching the Kastro to the top of the hill, through the little alleyways is an experience. On the way you will notice the remains of some Venetian nobles' homes, decorated with sculpted coats of arms. The little alleyways and the narrow streets of the Old Town are very picturesque and colourful.

The old town up on the hill is divided into two neighbourhoods, Bourgos where the the Greeks lived and Kastro (Castle), residence of the Venetian-Catholic nobility.

Behind the waterfront an extensive, almost Medieval Old Quarter stretches up the hillside where Kastro (Castle) is. The Venetian Castle is one of the very few inhabited castles in Greece.

“We were delighted to stay in this beautiful 400 year old place right in the middle of old town Naxos. So much history! There are even bronze age ruins to see under the building! The apartment had two rooms with outdoor seating as well and was just as described on the web. You can easily make your own breakfast, there is a delicious bakery very close. ”
